What is Music Therapy?

The Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines Music Therapy as being:

an evidence-based practice and Allied Health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they strive to improve their health, functioning and wellbeing.

Music Therapists are university trained, and must be registered with the AMTA, and complete ongoing professional development to maintain registration, and are also bound by a Code of Ethics.

Music therapists use music creatively and intentionally, incorporating a range of music making methods within and through a therapeutic relationship. These methods could include: familiar song singing, instrument playing, improvisation, song-writing, music and movement, and more.

They are employed in a variety of sectors including health, community, aged care, disability, early childhood, and private practice.  Music therapy is different from music education and entertainment as it focuses on health, functioning and wellbeing.
